Community funds undertake review

Building a sustainable future for local communities is driving a review of RTCA's community funding programmes.

Manager Sustainable Development and Social Policy Julie-Anne Braithwaite said the review will give locals their say about the types of projects future funding will support.

"The RTCA Community Development Funds and Coal & Allied Community Trust come to the end of a three year cycle in 2008," Julie-Anne said.

"Last year we examined and developed governance procedures. This year we will be surveying the community and talking to local stakeholders to ensure future funding continues to support worthwhile projects and deliver local benefits in the regions in which we operate.

"The review will give us feedback to ensure our activity is in line with community expectations."

The community relations team has already recognised opportunities to improve the Community Development Funds, by building links and creating synergies between individual programmes.

In 2007 the Queensland funds contributed almost $1 million towards improving the social, environmental and economic wellbeing of local communities.

The Community Trust finished its eighth year of funding in 2007, during which it provided more than $1.5 million towards sustainable projects in the Hunter Valley region.
